Clutch Adjustment – When is it Time?

Have you noticed your clutch slipping? Maybe it feels sticky, or there isn’t enough ‘give’ when you engage the pedal?  For a clutch to be properly adjusted you need 1 to 2 inches of free-play in the clutch before it is engaged.  If the clutch is tight from the moment you engage the pedal, your clutch needs adjusting.

When we adjust the clutch, the first thing we’ll do is spin the clutch brake. This is engaged when the clutch is pressed all the way to the floor.  If it doesn’t spin, that’s a good thing. Clutch brakes will wear out if they’re engaged while the truck is moving (they’re designed to be used to initially get the truck into gear).

If you’ve ever been through a DOT checkpoint, you know they can be thorough. They’ll check everything from lights to brakes and exhaust systems, and if you are flagged for something big – your truck could be taken out of service.

Cooling off an Overheating Engine

An overheating engine is not something you should ignore.  It can cause major damage to a cylinder, camshaft, bearings and crankshaft, to name just a few.

There are many reasons your truck engine may be overheating.  Maybe your coolant is too low. Maybe it’s an equipment malfunction.  Or, it might be as simple as a debris clog.

All kinds of coolers are found in truck engines – from the radiator cooler, to A/C cooler, power steering cooler, fuel coolers… and sometimes, debris can build up between them. You should be able to see the debris if you take a look under the truck.

Air Filter Maintenance and the Health of your Engine

Let’s talk about air filters. When it comes to keeping clean air flowing to your engine, regularly replacing your filter is an absolute must.

There are quite a few options available for air filters – generally speaking, we like to use what the manufacturer recommends.

So how often should you change your filter?  As with many other maintenance items, it really depends. If you primarily drive on the highway, your filter may last longer than, say, if you are in dustier, dirtier locations often. If dirt gets into your intake, it can damage your engine pretty quickly.

The Weather and Tire Pressure

The weather, as you may know, can play a big part in your tire pressure. It’s important to keep that in mind, particularly as the temperature drops.

Watch for more information on tire pressure.

Many trucks now have tire pressure monitors that will give you a heads up if the pressure is too low, but checking pressure manually is still a good idea. As a general rule, it’s best to check first thing in the morning. 

A tire can lose approximately 2 PSI for every 10-degree temperature loss.  So, if there is a wide temperature fluctuation during the day, be aware that the pressure will slowly increase as the temperature warms up (and vice versa for a temperature drop). 

The side of the tire will the max pressure that tire can hold for the max load it can carry.  One more note – don’t neglect to check the pressure on inside dual tires. Sometimes you may not even realize the inside tire is low. That’s why we recommend checking pressure at least once or twice a week.

Highest Honor

Serving our community is one of the things we strive to do here at Sawaya. We recently received a humbling recognition from the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association.

For the past 6 years, we have supported the Vietnam Helicopter War Museum by donating parts and labor for the trailer, and moving it from location to location.

This group honoring those who gave so much for our country presented US with a plaque to thank us for our help. WE are the ones who should be thanking them for their service. What a source of pride!
